"When I finally did return to my Y family, it was the best decision I had made for myself in years!"
My dad and my husband passed away on the same day a few years ago. Obviously, I was devastated and heartbroken. Before that day, it had been 14 years since I had been a member and water exercise instructor at the Y. I had, however, stayed connected with my good friends from the Y. They asked me to come back, but I just was not ready. I was still so sad and upset about what I had lost. When I finally did return to my Y family, it was the best decision I had made for myself in years!
I see my role not just as an instructor, but as a connector. I love to connect the members in my classes to one another. I want them to enjoy class and being healthy. We talk about life and what’s happening with each other. I see members come in who go to the back of the class and don’t talk to anyone; then after a few weeks, I’ve got them talking and laughing with others in the class.
If not for the Y, I’m not sure how I would be doing right now. The Y has helped me so much and because of that, I want to continue to give back.
